Darryl John Sutter was born on August 19, 1958, he is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player who most recently served as head coach of the Calgary Flames of the National Hockey League.
Sutter is one of the seven children of his parent, six of whom made the NHL (Brent, Brian, Darryl, Duane, Rich, and Ron); all but Rich and Gary (the seventh Sutter brother) worked alongside Darryl in some capacity during his first tenure with the Flames.
As a player, Sutter, like his brothers, developed a reputation for hard labor and aggressive, difficult play in almost 400 games. Sutter was the captain of the Chicago Blackhawks for five years before injuries forced him to retire at the age of 28.
Sutter has also been the head coach of the Chicago Blackhawks, San Jose Sharks, and Los Angeles Kings, in addition to the Flames. He led the Kings to Stanley Cup victories in 2012 and 2014. He previously worked for the Flames in several positions, including head coach from 2002 to 2006 and general manager from 2003 to 2010. Sutter returned to the Flames in 2021 for his second tenure as head coach.
